How do artists advocate for democratic values? This seminar considers the power and communal value of the arts. Encountering works from a variety of media, students and the professor react, respond, probe, muse, and argue their way towards a deeper understanding of artistic impulse, human expression, and the cultural and political challenges sometimes facing both. Texts include works by Anna Deavere Smith, Charlie Chaplin, 1960s songwriters, the creators of the Justice Choir Songbook, and others.
