REL 110B (2026-2027, Fall) Topics in Religion

In this course, students explore how ideas and systems of law function within religious traditions to shape rituals, communities, and conceptions of God. Students also examine how religious traditions have interacted with legal systems of countries and empires, and how these interactions have been shaped by power, race, gender, and other social forces. The specific religious traditions emphasized in each section depends on the particular expertise of the instructor; accordingly, section A focuses on Judaism and section B focuses on Islam. However, the two sections will sometimes meet together and work collaboratively, and at times students will consider additional forms of religion.
